Fontainebleau State Park Cabins

Fontainebleau State Park is a 2,809-acre Louisiana State Park on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. Founded in the 1930s, the park includes the former site of a sugar plantation once owned by Bernard de Mandeville de Marigny, remnants of which can still be seen today.

TPA served as the prime in a joint venture with Jeff Carbo Landscape Architecture and MESA to design the first major improvements to the park since its inception in the late 1930’s. The original project was expanded to include a Master Plan for the Park to guide it through the next twenty years of development followed by concentrated and specific construction projects.

Opportunity

The goal of the Master Plan for Fontainebleau State Park was to provide a realistic Recreational Development Plan, capitalizing on public access to the site’s diverse natural resources. These resources are the primary asset of the site and are meant to be conserved, protected and enhanced within a Resources Management Plan, the second critical component in the long-term success of the Park.

STRATEGY

TPA coordinated a complex array of partnerships, interests, and project parameters in the first major planning project since the park’s formation. Prior to commencing design, an inventory of natural and cultural resources was completed to establish the parameters that would dictate all proposed development. A three-day design charrette that included the designers, State Representatives, and various local environmental and civic groups was held at the park.

On the shore of the lake, 12 newly constructed visitor cabins perch high above the shallows at the margin between woods and water with views oriented west and south across Pontchartrain to the sunset.

Outcome

The Fontainebleau Master Plan applies systems thinking, amplifying bio-resources and establishing wayfinding tracks that connect visitors to nature, history, and information. This development positions the Park within a framework of national recreational trends, connecting with Office of State Parks programming, and aligning with realistic project funding. The park now provides public access to natural and cultural resources, the distinguishing characteristics of the site.
