Duplicate of City of Gretna Mixed-Use Compex
Spurring new activity in a historic downtown riverfront corridor.
Located adjacent to the historic Gretna City Hall and Jefferson Memorial in the heart of Historic Downtown Gretna, this urban infill project aims to attract visitors and spur economic activity with a new 3-story brewery by Port Orleans and 2-story restaurant by Avo Taco. A 3-story parking garage will serve visitors as well as the Jefferson Parish Government complex and court buildings.
Outcome
For the City of Gretna, this is more than a new retail development. The project activates city-owned property and complements the Huey P. Long corridor and provides a welcoming, economically viable, and contextually sensitive destination for the community.
The project prioritizes pedestrians, incorporating wayfinding and pedestrian zones to engage visitors during wait times or events, like Gretna Fest. The design also highlights the relationship to the Mississippi River and New Orleans’ East Bank, creating a visible, accessible connection.
The design also considers natural stormwater retention through bioswales and an above-ground cistern for the garage, promoting sustainability. Overall, the approach aims to activate the street, attract a diverse audience, and create a comfortable and flexible space.
