Like many properties along the Canal Street corridor, 714 Canal Street’s upper floors languished in vacancy, as noted in the 2018 Canal Street Catalyst study led by the Preservation Resource Center and Downtown Development District. Following the departure of a retail tenant, the narrow yet deep building has been fully renovated to house national retail brand, IT’SUGAR, on the ground-floor and a boutique hotel managed by Roami on floors two through five.
Originally designed by Favrot and Livaudais and completed in 1909 for men’s retailer, Mayer Israel and Company, the property was designed for a singular tenant. No provision had been made to provide independent access from the street to the upper stories. A new code compliant stair and elevator have been added, as well as a new lightwell that filters natural light to the units and serves as internal patio in the core of the building.
