Opportunity

Maison due KREWE, situated at 619 Royal Street in the heart of the French Quarter, is housed in a 4-story Creole townhouse dating to 1795. Abandoned for nearly 40 years and compromised by decades of insensitive patchwork, the primary goal was to uncover the original circulation, restore it, and seamlessly integrate it with modern experiences.

The  scope involved reimagining commercial usage on the ground floor; resurrecting the carriageway as a central artery with a reconstructed archway and inviting street-facing doors; redesigning the courtyard for structural soundness; and modernizing the upper floors for contemporary French Quarter living.

Strategy

The design was guided by historic profiles and creative problem-solving to preserve and enhance key historic elements, such as the carriageway and courtyard, while introducing modern touches. The restoration included careful attention to components like the stairwell, sunroom, and upper-floor apartments, which now exude a light and airy atmosphere.  KREWE du Optic’s design-forward brand and Olivia Erwin interiors are integrated into commercial spaces to create a mixed-use lifestyle destination with interior designer, Olivia Erwin.

Historical cues, like French ship ballast for courtyard flagstones, showcased a commitment to authenticity, creating a blend of historic charm and contemporary functionality. Notable transformations occurred in the carriageway, now a main artery with concealed utilities, and the courtyard, which underwent structural enhancements inspired by historic profiles. The carriageway pulls guests into the vibrant courtyard which features restored galleries, railings, and walls that seamlessly blend new elements with historic profiles.

Outcome

The design honors the building’s historical significance while reinvigorating it as a vibrant mixed-use space, balancing preservation with modern needs. By restoring original features like the carriageway and courtyard, the project preserves the rich architectural heritage of the French Quarter, offering a space where history is woven seamlessly into the daily life of its visitors and tenants.

For the client, the careful blending of traditional and contemporary elements has created an attractive, design-forward space that aligns with KREWE’s brand, making it a unique destination that appeals to residents, visitors, and patrons alike. Community value is added through enhanced street-level engagement, accessible public spaces, and the adaptive reuse of a long-neglected property, contributing to the ongoing revitalization of the neighborhood.
